GHC Bluebird Trail - archives of progress

Update April 7:  Eleven of the 25 bluebird houses at GHC have signs of activity.  Some nests are merely a few twigs, but two houses have complete nests and one of those nests has 4 eggs!  One male bluebird watched carefully from a nearby perch as his home was opened for inspection.

Update April 16:  Ten nests were found, eight of which appear to be bluebird nests, one chickadee nest (composed of tightly compacted moss) and one as yet unidentified species.  Four of the nests were complete nests, and there were a total of 13 eggs in those.  There was one female on the nest, and one male emerged from a nest that had eggs in it.

Update April 24:  Nests were found in 12 of the 25 houses.  9 eggs were found in the houses on the front nine, and on the back, there were 16 eggs and 3 baby birds in the houses!  Three of the eggs were chickadee eggs, white and speckled, and all of the other 22 eggs belonged to bluebirds.

Update May 1:  Nests were found in 14 of the 25 boxes, two of which are chickadee nests and one probably a house sparrow nest.  In the two chickadee nests there were a total of 13 white-speckled eggs.  In the bluebird nests, there were 21 blue eggs and 4 young birds.  Nothing was found in the bluebird nests that had young last week, so it is hoped that those baby birds have fledged!!  The population is growing!

Update May 8:  Greene Hills now has 16 baby bluebirds on the property!  9 more bluebird eggs and 13 chickadee eggs were also found.

Update May 18:  There has been evidence of nesting in 19 of the 25 houses.  Two of those nests were house sparrow nests, which were removed because they are not a protected species and they can potentially harm bluebird nests.  In 17 remaining houses there are house wrens (4 eggs), chickadees (11 young) and bluebirds!  There are some new BB nests this week, 8 bluebird eggs in three houses, and a total of 23 young in six houses, many of them approaching the age to fledge.  You should start noticing young bluebirds all around Greene Hills!

Update May 28:  There has been a lot of activity in the bluebird boxes at GHC.  So far 19 baby bluebirds have fledged, and there are 9 more who will soon be leaving their homes.  There are also 12 more bluebird eggs that will be hatching soon. Counting the bluebirds, we now have four different species of desirable birds in our houses :  Carolina Chickadees (6 chicks, 4 eggs), House Wrens (6 eggs), and Tree Swallows (just building a nest).  Watch for the baby bluebirds!!
